Websites come and websites go, the band could break up tomorrow, an earthquake could destroy greater Tokyo... Who knows what tomorrow will bring? But thanks to the incredible enthusiasm of our two founders and editors-in-chief, we non-Japanese speakers have an unbelievable resource for our band. Uncounted hours of labor have gone into the translations, not to mention the time and yen spent collecting the magazines and articles. It's not just the translations, though. They have given us a space to build a community. I've been up and down these great fandoms of ours for nigh on ~~ years, and I know how rare a thing it is that they've made. All hail the troll-free comments!
To celebrate in some small way, the year gone by, Risu and Nao have pulled out an Editors' Choice Top 20. They've selected and commented on the translations that they like the best from each month.
But wait! There's more! To celebrate the anniversary we're holding a raffle for all our registered members. Oh yes. The Grand Prize: Merchandise from either December's a knot only lives, or January's Budokan lives. There will be other, smaller prizes yet to be determined. The raffle will be on December 5, 2009. Announcement of winners will be on December 6, 2009! Congratulations to the following individuals:

Editors' Choice Top 20
November 2008:
Dir en grey's Apology!? by Kyo
Nao: I first couldn’t believe it that this came from Kyo’s mouth. But after reading their interviews and Haiiro no Ginkas, I came to realize that it is true. It made me think twice about going to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor in Japan.
Risu: What I like about this was how candid Kyo sounded. That sarcastic wit of his is total win.
December 2008:
Kaoru’s UROBOROS Limited Blogs
Nao: And I thought Kaoru has changed ever since he told Inoue that he was fat and that he should stop drinking beer in Kaoru's old Haiiro no Ginka. It’s the same way Liida criticized the food at his local China Town and that his mom’s curry was the best. Thankfully, I somehow expected this out of him – all hail to the Anthony Bourdain of the band.
Risu: What can I say? The man has standards. And I thought I was bad…but they were interesting reads into how he expects things to be. I surely didn’t want to be Inoue at that moment…
January 2009:
Nao: I’m sure that I would have done a better job of translating this if it weren’t for me laughing and snickering at every paragraph.
Risu: Just the image of a young Kaoru trying not to be shocked when he heard that La:Sadies only had one song that they practiced for hours was just totally funny!
Falling Prey to Kyo's Stupidity 4/20/2001
Nao: I wonder how his neighbor reacted? I seriously wanted to see his face when Kyo said that he should get a dog.
Risu: I didn’t know that he had a pollen allergy and I totally empathize with the noisy neighbor. I would have done the same thing, maybe minus telling his neighbor off to just get a dog instead of moving his TV at night.
February 2009:
Nao: I liked it because he was able to explain his world-view in a way that anyone would be able to understand it and also be able to put an end to all that bickering and fighting about his lyrics.
Risu: What struck me the most was how much of his world-view was explained in just one interview. I have to honestly admit that I never really understood much about Kyo until I read this interview.
Shankara - Toshiya Personal Interview
Nao: This interview made me realize how close the members really were to each other and how much dedication and talent they have just to finish a beautiful song in just one night.
Risu: I felt teary eyed when I was reading and translating this interview. Honestly this is one of those interviews where you can see how the members really feel about each other or at least see their relationship from another member’s point of view. I especially liked how Toshiya talked about how they finished DOZING GREEN with just the five of them inside a hotel room, drinking, and then watching the sunrise. Every time I hear Kyo sing, “In the sun…” at every live --- it’s like I feel all of that. It is such a beautiful feeling.
Shinya’s UROBOROS Limited Blogs
Nao: Shinya’s smileys are win! He made me read and reread stuff he wrote and also made me realize why the other Dir en grey members hailed him as one of the best comedians in the band. Die and Shinya equals the best Manzai conbi/pair ever!
Risu: His smileys, witty titles, and the total randomness of it all made me realize just how funny Shinya really is! This smiley (>◆<”)is something that I will never forget! Thanks Shinya! As I quote, “Everyone, please use this smiley”.
March 2009:
Nao: When I read this for the first time, it was like the first time I was introduced to porn films and how crazy some of them were…
Risu: Five stars for the shock factor…but why am I not surprised at that? Although I didn’t expect Kyo to also be a conspiracy theory buff. I am still curious about what he has to say about McDonalds though.
Mobile QnA 2/11/2004 & Mobile QnA 3/31/2004
Risu: Shinya, take it from Newton’s Third Law of Motion, “that any time a force acts from one object to another, there is an equal force acting back on the original object”. It’s cause and effect --- you take a jab at the members…and if you think they wouldn’t mind…be wary because you know they’ll make a jab at you when you least expect it. *lols*
Nao: Oh Shinya. How you make me laugh. And how you turned out to be called, Mr. Chicken. It’s okay, your secret is safe with us *snickers*.
Risu: Shinya’s journals always never fail to make me laugh. I actually thoroughly enjoyed Shinya talking about how Die and Toshiya forced him to ride the “Hulk”. Hahahaha and Shinya trying to explain “King Kong” to Kenji. *laughs*
May 2009:
Nao: The fact that Toshiya and J were in one interview is in itself very historic because it has never happened before. All we know is that Toshiya is J’s kohai but their relationship was never really publicized. To hear about what J thinks of Dir en grey is really important for a lot of people.
Risu: My two bass idols, Toshiya x J both in one radio show. This in itself is very important for me. I also like how Toshiya teased J and vice versa and how J talked about how Toshiya and he met for the very first time.
Nao: I really wanted his drumhead. My God, Shinya. How can you think of such things…makeinu, makeinu!
Risu: Again, Shinya never fails to make me laugh. I especially loved how his sweet potato “transformed” into a potato. *lols*
July 2009:
Nao: It’s nice to know about an honest opinion about Dir en grey from one of the members themselves. If you want to stop the bullshit and get straight answers. Ask Shinya.
Risu: Reading about how Dir en grey was close to disbanding if it weren’t for their foreign tours was really shocking for me. I really like how Shinya was very honest about how he felt about Dir en grey and UROBOROS.
August 2009:
Nao: Woohoo! Talk about indies life. This is where the dirt is! Now you get to know why they did the bus thing again and why they wanted to do it. It’s filled with memories such as this. Poor Die. Haunted by members then; Haunted by nightmares now. Let me guess who were the cause of it.
Risu: Trying to imagine how Kyo and Shinya did “yoga poses” while trying to sleep in the back of the band van was just too funny. I like how both he and Kaoru were also laughing about their childhood. I cannot imagine how weird it feels when four people are staring at you while you sleep since you are the only one who had a driver’s license. Poor Die.
September 2009:
Nao: Yes, Die likes girls. Only if you know about this. This is a handbook for any person willing to be Die’s girlfriend. Read and follow the steps 1-2-3.
Risu: This is a MUST read manual for any single Die fan. It’s nice to also hear about Die talking honestly about his self-esteem issues. It makes me feel at least normal for feeling the same way too.
Haiiro no Ginka vol. 44 Shinya Nemunemu Hakushi no Daigyakusyu
Nao: George, I am so happy that they still included you on their America trip right now after what you did to Shinya in this one! Now I understand why Kaoru drew Dr. Nemunemu in Dragonfly that way. (e.g. hunting them down like rabbits.)
Risu: Goodness. I never knew that being a drum tech of Shinya could be such a high-risk occupation. I don’t think I can be that efficient with my boss screaming in one ear telling me to do something that I don’t know about.
Nao: You can find Kyo’s accurate history of how he came about being a member of Dir en grey through this article. And yes, Kyo --- white makeup, bandages, and some sort of weapon can make audiences cry. Not like the way you make audiences cry now.
Risu: Kyo talking about Toshiya being “shiny” or charismatic that he just “wanted to be his friend” is already enough for me to recommend this article. Plus Kyo mentioning that Kaoru was initially hard to get along with was also funny.
October 2009:
Nao: Kyo got straight to the point. No bullshit. Just pure love and hate.
Risu: I like how Kyo said that he both hated and loved women. I also liked how he said that he was a person who was filled with paradoxes. In a way this interview explained how he wrote his lyrics. It’s also surprising and maybe nice to know that he hasn’t really changed much since before.
Risu: I had to stop myself from laughing out loud when I was transcribing this interview since my boss was sitting right next to me at work. This is definitely one of those interviews that you keep because it just contains so much rare information about what Dir en grey did during their indies I definitely would like to translate more of their older interviews just because they used to reveal more personal stuff before.
